proskyneō – to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): — worship. To kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence.
The word ‘worship’ literally means to prostrate oneself in reverential surrender. It is generally portrayed as an act of yielding oneself in awe of what a person has seen or experienced.
Worship is always a response to a personal experience. It’s a response to something we either see or behold.
In the Old Testament, we see that whenever the patriarch and people encountered a ‘spiritual’ entity, they ‘worshipped’ in response. (Authorised KJV)
Worship isn’t supposed to be a ritualistic Sunday morning program we engage in as a prescribed way of doing church. It has to be a product of an encounter with an awesome God or a loving Father.
We worship Him not because He commands worship or demands it – or because it’s the right thing to do – that’s just formality.
We worship out of a tangible experiential relationship we engage in.
Let your relationship with God be the foundation of your worship to Him – and not the other way around.
God is Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship in Spirit and in Truth. – John 4:24
